Out with the Old in with the Joy

Of all the seasons to inspire a closet refresh, spring reigns supreme. As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, our wardrobes beg for a shift in style, color and feel. Of all the rooms in a home to spring clean, the closet might be the easiest. Celebrity organizer Marie Kondo, author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing says it’s the least emotionally loaded space of the house. Her strategy? Ditch everything that doesn’t spark joy, and store the remaining items in an accessible, aesthetically pleasing manner. Once you’ve purged your closet and created some space for joy-inducing items, welcome spring with one of these of-the-season items destined to make you smile.

Paper Bag Pants
A new season is the ideal time to play with form and function and try a new silhouette. This season’s wide fitted pants tie up the waistline with belts and ribbons, creating volume on both the top and bottom of it. The loosely draped fabric is as comfortable as pajamas, but when worn with a fitted top, creates an effortlessly chic and current look. Pair them with a crop top and sneakers for a cool-girl look or sport them with heals and a tucked top for an evening out.

Hello, Yellow
The color of lemons is as refreshing as their scent. Wearing yellow instantly boosts your mood, and the mood of others around you. Don marigold and you can fool almost anyone into thinking you’re a sunny optimist. While it might seem an obvious choice for spring, the fashion world made the hue an official trend when it emerged as the most popular color on the spring 2019 runways during New York Fashion Week.

Overalls
While it may seem an intimidating denim trend, women over 30 (and 40 and 50) can and should give overalls a try. These aren’t the dungarees of your childhood—today’s overalls flatter and offer endless styling options. Pair them with a white scoopneck T, black ballet flats and  wayfarer sunglasses for an effortlessly chic spring look. Dress them up with pointed-toe booties and a fitted long-sleeve top in a contrasting color. Offering versatile layering options, overalls are the perfect match for spring’s indecisive weather. And if there’s any season to try a completely new look, it’s spring.
